A few years ago, AI image generators were pitched as friendly assistants: “They’ll just help you sketch faster.” Then platforms like ArtStation and Pixiv were flooded with AI-generated images overnight, protest banners took over homepages, and artists started deleting portfolios they had built over a decade.
Two years after the first big “AI art ban” headlines, the dust hasn’t really settled. The fight is no longer just about what the tools can do, but about a harder question: what it still means to call something “your” work in a world of prompts and models.
When tools like Midjourney and Stable Diffusion first appeared, they were treated as a curiosity on most art platforms. “Look, I typed this sentence and the model spat out a dragon knight!” It felt closer to a party trick than a professional pipeline.
That mood changed the moment AI-generated pieces started appearing in the same feeds as hard-won portfolios. A fully rendered character sheet could be produced in seconds and tagged like any other piece. To viewers, everything sat in one long scroll. To artists, it felt like running a marathon next to someone on a scooter.
ArtStation, which many studios literally use as a hiring funnel, became the first high-profile battleground. Illustration feeds were plastered with protest images “No to AI-generated images,” and artists began to ask for something very simple: “If this is AI-assisted, just say so.”
Personally, I think portfolios sit in a special category. They’re not just pictures; they are receipts for your time, your decisions, your skill. Using AI in your workflow isn’t inherently wrong. But if a portfolio is the basis for hiring, I’d like to believe people are competing on roughly comparable effort.
When ArtStation started moderating protests instead of simply clarifying labels, many artists felt the platform was protecting “algorithmic output” over human work. In the end, ArtStation stepped back from outright bans and leaned into filters and labels instead — a quieter compromise than either side probably wanted.
Different platforms took slightly different routes, but a pattern emerged: not full prohibition, but separation and disclosure.
